Non-photorealistic rendering is often used to simulate painting or drawing styles an artist would use. There are many techniques to simulate these styles. Here, a segment of Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” is shown using ellipses packed according to the gradient values in the image -- causing the ellipses to align “more or less” with the edges.
