Christoph Garth accepts faculty position at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern
Christoph Garth, a postdoc in IDAV for the past four years, has accepted a faculty position at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. Dr. Garth has had a very successful postdoc career, winning the UC Davis Postdoc of the Year award in 2010.

Hank Childs gives the Keynote Presentation at EGPGV
Hank Childs gave the keynote presentation at the Eurographics Symposium on Parallel Graphics and Visualization (EGPGV). His talk was entitled "Exascale Visualization: Get Ready for a New World", and discussed the upcoming constraints in developing visualization software that will be required in these new machines.

John Owens research group becomes part of an Intel Center
As of January 2011, the research group of John Owens is part of the Intel Science and Technology Center for Visual Computing , a $2.5M / 5-year collaboration between Intel and 8 universities, including UC Davis. Owens is leading UC Davis's involvement in the STC as well as the “Graphics Systems” theme within the center. ( ISTC home, press release) This effort has been featured in a Youtube video.

Gosink paper selected as the Spotlight Paper for IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics
Luke Gosink, Christoph Garth, John Anderson, Wes Bethel, and Ken Joy's paper "An Application of Multivariate Statistical Analysis for Query-Driven Visualization" has been chosen as the spotlight paper for the March 2011 issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. The paper will be highlighted on the journal home page and will be available to the public for free for 30 days.

Hummel Picture wins Computer Graphics Forum 2011 Cover Image Contest
Mattias Hummel, Christoph Garth, Bernd Hamann, Hans Hagen, and Kenneth I. Joy have won the Computer Graphics Forum 2011 cover image contest. This yearly competition is hosted by the Computer Graphics Forum, the preeminent journal of the Eurographics Society. The image shows a stream surface in a vortex breakdown bubble, and was created using IRIS, a system for illustrative surface rendering produced in IDAV.
